Yesterday, we went over the rubric and expectations for the reading response portion of the Provincial Exam. Today students wrote a practice mini-synthesis essay relating to stories seen on the Provincial Exam.

We started the day with more work on vocabulary. After that, I went over the synthesis essay portion of the Provincial Exam. We looked at the rubric, we looked at how to plan out the essay, and we looked at essay samples. We read through the essay samples and discussed the grades given. After that, we analyzed the poems "Meditation xvii" and "I am a Rock".

Today we worked on personification, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. We then analyzed the poem "The Child Who Walks Backwards", and started writing  Limericks and Haikus. To finish class, we watched a short video on the myth of "Narcissus and Echo".

Of the first half of the period, we worked on vocabulary and completed a comparison worksheet for Speak and Plain Janes. We then analyzed the song "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Metallica and looked at poetic devices.

During the second half, students took a final test on Speak.

Today we retrieved copies of the book Myth. We read the story of Heracles/Hercules, discussed  it, and completed questions. We will be starting a Greek Mythology project tomorrow, so at the end of class, students picked the Greek Myth they wanted to study.

On Friday, we finished the movie Big Fish; students had questions to complete over the weekend for this. Today, we talked about the characteristics of myths. We then read "The Flood" and discussed it as a class. We also analyzed the poem "The Earthling".

We have been carrying on with reading the lyrical novel "The Crazy Man". On Friday, we discussed 'synesthesia' and today we worked on a chart that indicates proof that Angus has synesthesia. We also finished the section 'Meeka' today and wrote a Character Journal Response.

Two weeks to go!!!
Students wrote an in-class synthesis essay last week and we are finalizing our unit on Speak this week. Today we watched a documentary about the Jian Gomeshi case and its parallels with the themes/events from Speak. We also looked at characteristics of graphic novels and started the graphic novel "Plain Janes"

Today we started an Independent Novel Study Portfolio Project. We spent half the class in the library getting started. Make sure to use only novels retrieved from the library this semester.

After the break, we worked on Commonly Confused Words, and read up to page 114 in "The Crazy Man".  Students also completed a worksheet for the section "Angus".

Today we worked on more vocabulary, and I handed back your last written compositions. We went over two good examples of compositions, and students wrote another composition with the topic "sometimes people and events can surprise us".

During the second half, we finished the movie Speak and started filling out a plan for an in-class essay on Speak that is to be written this Friday, January 8, 2016.

We started off with work on vocabulary, and then students took notes on symbolism and themes in Speak. We continued class by starting the movie version of the novel.

Silent reading and Commonly Confused Words.
We started off by completing the introduction chart for "The Crazy Man" that we started yesterday, and then completed an open-book quiz on the section 'Emaline'. Students then took notes and reviewed poetic devices and definitions. We then started the section 'Angus' and read up to page 68. We'll continue this next class.

Today we discussed and analyzed two poems in Sightlines 8: "When I was a Little Girl" and "My Mother Who Came From China and Never Saw Snow". We also looked at topics corresponding to the poems, including Japanese Internments Camps in North America and Sweatshops in China.

Today we started going over vocabulary words to help students for the Provincial Exam. We then finished the novel Speak and worked on questions.

Today we worked on commonly confused words and read/discussed the poem "It's Different Now". We then went over definitions for folk tales/tall tales/myths/fables/legends. We read "The Moth and the Star" and "How the Opossum  stole Fire" and worked on questions. We also watched the Disney example of the fable "The Grasshopper and the Ants".  If you didn't finish the questions for "How the Opossum Stole Fire", here they are:

1. Find two reasons why the Great Ones desired to have fire.
    2. How had they attempted to get the fire that passes overhead each day?
    3. What three things did Yaushu ask of his people, in return for bringing fire to them?
    4. How did Yaushu persuade the Lord of the Fire to let him stay overnight?
    5. Name two ways the opossum looks today as a result of his adventure.
