English 9

Spring Break is upon us!!!!

Today we started off with grammar and silent read Chapters 13 and 14 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Then students worked on questions for Chapters 9-11. After that, we started watching the film Life is Beautiful, another story about the Holocaust.

English 10

Today we read "How Not to be Called On" and the play "This is a Test". Thank you so much to the people who read this play! Students then completed questions, and we started going over the format for the Provincial Exam.

English 8

Students started of class with an open-book grammar quiz, and then silent read Chapter 7 in The Outsiders. After that, we discussed Chapter 6 questions and started writing a "Trial by Fire" newspaper article, using the events from Chapter 6.

English 9

We started off with grammar, and then I gave students time to work on the 'Letter to Grandmother' assignment. This will be due next class (only the rough draft needs to be submitted). After that, I went through important quotes in Chapters 9-11 in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and discussed Nazi book burning, judaism/swastika symbols, and Eva Braun. I then gave time towards the end of class to silent read Chapter 12.

English 10

We worked on the Sightlines project again today. This was out last class time; it is due Wednesday.

After some grammar editing, students silent read Chapters 10-11 in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. They then worked on questions for Chapter 7 and started a 'Letter to Grandmother Assignment'.

Today students silent read their independent novel study books and we went over a worksheet on parts of speech; there will be an open-book grammar quiz tomorrow. After that, students finished working on a crossword and we read Chapter 6 in The Outsiders.

English 9

We started off with grammar editing and 15 minutes of silent reading (Chapter 9 in Boy in the Striped Pajamas). After that, we watched 'Top 10 Facts about WW2', went over Chapter 5-6 questions, and discussed Chapters 7-8. We finished off class watching a Walt Disney propaganda video about the education of Nazis.

English 8

We started off with 15 minutes of silent reading for the Independent Novel Study. After that, we looked at the character sketches from last class and students copied down the main points for each character. After that, we discussed Chapter 5 in The Outsiders and analyzed the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost, as it is significant in the novel; there were notes accompanied with this. Equally, we watched a couple clips form Gone With the Wind to help us understand Johnny's fascination with 'southern gentlemen'. We finished off class working on questions and a crossword.

We spent the day working on Sightlines projects. I will allot more time for this Monday.

English 10

We started off class by watching the climax of the film version of "Oedipus Rex". After that, we read and discussed two poems in Sightlines 10 :"Warren Pryor" and "Non-conformist". I then introduced a final project for the Sightlines 10 unit. We spent the rest of class working on that. We will continue the project tomorrow.

English 8

We started off the day silent reading Chapter 5 in The Outsiders. We then discussed the events in Chapters 2-4 and went over the vocabulary worksheet. After that, students worked on questions for Chapters 2-4. For the rest of the period, students were put in groups for a character activity; each group was assigned to a particular 'Greaser' and had to identify character information on chart paper. At the end of class, I handed out progress reports.

Wednesday 9 March 2016

English 9

Over the last couple of days, we've read almost up to Chapter 9 in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. We've gone through some improtant quotes and imagery, and worked on questions. Today, we watched a clip of the Anne Frank mini series,  and I showed personal pictires of Auswitz and Poland to enhance the imagery in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

English 8

I was away yesterday; the class worked on a grammar worksheet on 'parts of speech' and read Chapter 4 of The Outsiders aloud. Students then worked on some vocabulary.

English 10

Last class, we finished the "Face in the Pool" worksheet by watching a video, "The Rise of Narcissism", and discussing the questions on the worksheet. We then read and analyzed the myth "Oedipus Rex" and I explains some o the main ideas through a PowerPoint. Then  students completed questions for the story.

English 9

We started off with grammar, and then students silent read Chapters 3 and 4 in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. After that, we discussed the first two chapters of the book and worked on a question booklet.

English 8

Students silent read for the first half hour of class. Make sure to read up to Chapter 4 for tomorrow.
After that, we worked on conjunctions/interjections, and we discussed the first Chapter of The Outsiders.

English 10

Today we read the essay "My Body is My Own Business" and the "My Body" comic strip from Sightlines 10. Students had corresponding questions. We then read and analyzed "The Face in the Pool", and watched a very old animation of the story.

English 10

Today I gave a mini history lesson on Residential Schools; we also watched a clip from the documentary "Muffins for Grannies" and a Canadian propaganda commercial promoting the schools. We then read the story "Borders" and worked on a worksheet.

English 9

We started off class with a lesson on apostrophes, and then worked on a plot analysis for Armageddon. This was to be submitted in class. After that, we read the narrative poem "Think Like a Weightlifter, Think Like a Woman" and worked on questions.

To finish off class, students worked on the good copies of their narrative paragraphs that they submitted a little while ago. I went through them, edited them, and handed them  back. Students just have to apply the changes to the good copy.

English 8

We started off class with silent reading and a lesson on coordinating conjunctions; we even listened to a catchy song to help us remember conjunctions.

After that, we worked on a literary character paragraph, which we will continue next class. We finished class by playing a Jeopardy review game and Mad Libs.
