Today I handed back the "Romeo and Juliet" Act One quiz, and then we spent the rest of the class in the library working on "Romeo and Juliet" projects.

Have fun in Cuba (for those who are going)!

We started off the day with silent reading. After that, I explained the plot of "Pyramus and Thisbe", as it relates to "A Midsummer Night's Dream". I read a quick summary, and we watched a video about the story. We then read Act Three, Scene 1 of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and completed corresponding questions.

It's already May!
Today we started off with silent reading and worked on vocabulary from The Giver. We then simulated the 'Ceremony of Twelves' form The Giver; each student was assigned a number and a job based on random selection. The purpose of this was to understand the functioning of the community and the feelings of the characters in the novel. After that, students worked on questions for Chapters 8-10 in The Giver.

English 9

We started off the day with editing practice, and then reviewed the events form Act Two, Scene 1 of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". We finished reading Act Two, Scene 2, and worked on questions. We also watched the scenes on the movie. In addition, we played a quote identification game.

During the second period, we started off with silent reading. I then introduced the students to the Independent Novel Study Portfolio project. They worked on a journal response and a title page for their portfolios.

English 8

We started off with silent reading and more practice with subjects and predicates. Students then worked on questions for Chapters 5-7 in The Giver. After that, we read Chapters 8 and 9 as a class. During the second half off class, students started a creative assignment for The Giver and we spent the period in the IT Lab working on it. We'll have another period to finish this.

Today we started a creative assignment for "Romeo and Juliet" and spent the first block in the library working on it. You'll also have Friday's class to finish it. During the second part of class, we read Act Four, scenes 1-4 and worked on corresponding questions. We finished off with a game of quotation identification.

We started off class with silent reading and a worksheet on capitalization. After that, we completed a review booklet for The Outsiders test. We then finished watching the movie version of the novel.

After the break, students worked on a vocabulary crossword puzzle and we went to the IT Lab to finish the Newsletter assignment.

We did some practice with compositions for the first half of class today. We looked at good examples and mediocre examples of compositions to see how they are grade on the Provincial Exam. Then students spent the period writing a composition on with the following topic:  "The unknown can be surprising".

During the second part of class, I did a full review Powerpoint of Act One in "Romeo and Juliet" (since there is a quiz Friday), we read Act Two, scenes 1-2, and completed a worksheet. We then watched the movie of the famous orchard scene.

English 9

We started off the day with grammar editing, and students continued working on their literary paragraphs they started last class. I will be asking for the paragraphs to be turned in after the BSP test on Friday.

After that, we finished going over the test review worksheet and also completed some notes on the main themes in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. If you were absent, make sure to get the notes on both these things; the content will be on the test.

The last line of The Boy int eh Striped Pajamas states: "Of course this happened a long time ago and nothing like this would ever happen again. Not this day in age." We discussed the  verbal irony of this statement and looked at a couple of videos demonstrating the history of the genocide in Rwanda and in Bosnia.

I then gave the class time to work on their BSP final projects.

Toward the end of class, we watched the first 20 minutes of Shakespeare in Love, as an introduction to Shakespeare. Our next unit will be "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

We started off the day by going over questions for "The Landlady", and the played a Jeopardy review game for the Sightlines unit. After that, we looked at an introduction Powerpoint of the history of Shakespeare, analyzed a Shakespearean Star Wars Prologue, and got copies of "Romeo and Juliet" from the library.

Students wrote a Sightlines test during the second half.
